01 — Why we exist

Anadi & Rohit's Masauli

Masauli is a small village in Pratapgarh district, Uttar Pradesh — the village where Udbodh co-founder Anadi spent his childhood summers. His childhood friend Rohit stayed behind, and while Anadi went on to a good education and a career, Rohit's schooling collapsed under the weight of a poor local education system.

That gap between two friends' lives became the reason Udbodh exists. Anadi returned with fellow founders Keshav and Krishna to launch Udbodh — built to empower people through education so that everyone, regardless of where they are born, gets the chance to make informed, life-changing choices.

"Where an individual realises their true potential." — Our vision. "We provide learning solutions to enable an individual to be independent and fully participate in daily life." — Our mission.

The ground reality

What our door-to-door survey found

01

Only 1 girl in 100 goes on to college.

02

60% of Grade 5 children cannot read a Grade 2 text.

03

More than half of children drop out before finishing middle school.

04

Just two houses in the entire village have a toilet.

05

Lack of education drives heavy migration to Delhi and Mumbai.

06

Only 4 hours of electricity a day — not enough for farming or business.

07

Nearest health clinic is 10 km away.

08

Women face discrimination at every stage of life.

02 — In the classroom

Teaching that meets children where they are

Every Udbodh fellow is trained to notice who's falling behind and why — then to sit with that child, one on one if needed, until a concept actually lands. Exams like the annual Chatravriti scholarship test are less a formality than a chance to see, concretely, what a year of steady teaching has changed.

A fellowship model built to outlast us

Udbodh runs a residential fellowship where committed young women from the community are trained and mentored to reform elementary education from within — for as long as it takes.

Short-term theory of change

Fellows are selected from educated girls in the community and receive round-the-clock mentoring to sharpen their pedagogy and content delivery — aiming for measurably better learning outcomes for 70+ children and deeper trust with villagers.

Long-term theory of change

The program builds fellows' self-understanding and skills — communication, mobilisation, planning, advocacy and management — turning them into change-makers for life, working on every issue a village faces.

Who we look for

Every fellow is chosen against the same bar — because the work asks a lot of the people who do it.

  • Graduate or pursuing graduation
  • Passionate about education
  • Comfortable living in a rural setting
  • Committed to 2 years of service
  • Willing to leave their comfort zone
  • Open to new experiences, reflective
  • Planning & execution skills
  • Strong analytical ability
  • Skilled at building relationships
  • A good communicator
03 — Beyond the classroom

Working with the community, not just for it

Udbodh partners with local panchayats and authorities to run awareness camps — helping villagers access PAN cards, government schemes, and basic services that are otherwise a long, confusing trip away. It's slow, unglamorous work, and it's how trust gets built one family at a time.

Friendship is part of the curriculum

The strongest evidence of what Udbodh does isn't a statistic — it's the ease between children who grew up in a village with almost nothing built for them, and who are now growing up with a classroom, a fellow, and each other.

New initiative

Gajanand Learning Centre

Opened this January in village Fatanpur, Pratapgarh — in loving memory of Late Gajanand Teluram Agarwal — this early-learning centre brings a play-based, Montessori-inspired classroom to young children. It's donated by PCPL Foundation and implemented jointly by Udbodh, Sampoorna Shiksha and the Pagaria Welfare Foundation.

Digital future

Rural India, meeting technology early

Three children, three screens, one teacher moving quietly between them — the centre's small computer lab is often the first time a child in Masauli touches a keyboard. It's a small room doing outsized work.
